Can the Dolphins win a championship this year? And if so, what do they have to do? |
Brandon Niles Oct 01, 08 | As much as I love the Dolphins, I don't believe they can win a championship this year. I think that going 8-8 would be a great feat for them, and I think it's a reasonable hope. They were very close to beating the Jets and everyone knows they had a great outing against the Patriots. The Dolphins are truly in a rebuilding mode right now though. They're offensive line is very talented, but young and still learning how to work together. They'll get better as the season progresses. Their defense is in the same boat. They have some wily veterans in the mix (Ferguson, Allen, Porter, etc.) but they're a young group overall. Additionally, they simply do not have enough talent at key positions to make a strong push. Will Allen is a very good CB, but they have issues at the safety position, and at the other Corner spot. Also, they need their LB corps to make the plays they can make. Akin Ayodele needs to play to his potential. He shows up big at times, but disappears at others. Also, Miami needs a top-notch WR. Ted Ginn isn't there yet, and may never be that number one guy they need, and everyone else is a role player at best. Finally, Chad Pennington is a smart QB, but his physical limitations will likely keep him from being a championship QB at this point in his career. After a while, defenses can plan for his playing style and he won't be able to carry the team when the running game isn't stellar. Miami's future is looking up, but there are simply too many variables, too much inexperience, and too many holes in the team to do it this year. Look for a steady improvement, with playoffs at least a year or two away. |
