“A good leader inspires people to have confidence in the leader, a great leader inspires people to have confidence in themselves”
A Quarterback is usually the unquestioned leader of a football team. When Dan Marino retired, the fins for once in a long time lacked a strong leader, many tried to fill his shoes, (Huard, Fiedler, Griese, Lucas, Feeley, Frerotte, Rosenfels, Harrington, Culpepper, Green, and Lemon) all failed. Some can argue that Jay Fiedler was the best of that list, I beg to differ. Fiedler’s inadequacies were masked by a strong ground game, when that ground game disappeared his true leadership ability showed through.
How long did Marino direct the Fins to victory without a ground game, virtually his entire career. Who knows what he might achieved if the Fins had a great back, we might have seen a Superbowl victory maybe more. It worked for Elway.
I believed in Culpepper, I also believed he was forced to play early in fear of losing his starting job to Harrington. The result, Culpepper got hurt again, and never had the chance to lead the fins and in my opinion was eventually screwed Miami management.
Now we have Pennington at QB, one of the most accurate passers in NFL history, some believed him to be finished as a starting quarterback. Is he the one of the pieces we have been missing? An 8-5 record can answer that, a vast improvement from the 1-15 record less than a year ago.
Pennington has come through when our ground game has failed and has won. I believe if we somehow attain a playmaker WR, we will be a serious threat next year. Pennington’s acquisition was a major rebuilding step for the Fins and has given us the leader we have been searching for, for quite a long time.
